Vacation is a perfect time to unwind, relax and let your mind go, but that doesn’t mean you have to let your waistline go too! Taking a break from the daily grind is actually a fantastic time to incorporate new forms of physical activity, healthy meals and some well-deserved “me time”. Rest assured, you will enjoy yourself much more if you’re not feeling bloated while hitting the beach. Remember..creating a healthy lifestyle is about moderation, finding balance and living healthy. I’m certainly not suggesting that you shouldn’t indulge during your break, but next time you are on vacation try some of my tips so that you come home feeling your absolute best.
Start your day with a long walk or light jog along the beach. You will work up a sweat, burn fats from the night before, earn your breakfast and feel energized for the day! During the day, get in the water and start treading. You can burn tons of calories and have fun while you are doing it. If you are feeling up for an adventure you can go surfing, paddle boarding, go for a hike or explore the town by going for a bike ride. If you love dancing, after dinner shake it up on the dance floor.
2.)Detox & Hydrate
Drink a cup of hot water with lemon (or cold if you prefer that) before eating breakfast. The lemon will alkalize your PH, making your body inhabitable to disease, while stimulating your digestion and liver. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water to keep yourself hydrated and to flush out toxins. If you need something with a little more flavor, drink a nice tall glass of fresh unsweetened tea.
3.) Indulge in Moderation
For breakfast, add veggies to your omelet or steamed spinach or smoked salmon with your poached egg. If you crave something sweet, try a cup of fruit with some fresh honey and yogurt. For lunch and dinner you can order a salad with the dressing on the side and the local fish (steamed, baked or grilled). To finish off the meal, ask for some veggies instead of fries. Green veggies will help you metabolize your food and aid in your digestion while crowding out the unhealthy foods. Another easy way to reduce calorie intake is by skipping bread at dinner.
4.) Have a snack plan
Whether you are on the plane, at the beach or just hanging out in your hotel room.. it’s important to have snacks in arms reach, so that you’re not forced to eat typical empty calorie fattening vending snacks. Pack some easy options such as unsalted nuts, dried fruit, seeded crackers, fresh fruit or sliced veggies.
5.) Relax in the sun
Try to get at least 15- 30 minutes of sunshine a day. It is the best way to get vitamin D into your body is on skin without sunscreen (avoid peek UV periods so that you don’t get burnt). Vitamin D boosts our immune system and helps prevent cancer.
6.) Get a massage
This is a wonderful way to relax & move toxins out of the body. It also aids in digestion.
7.) Relax & breathe
Find a few minutes each day to sit, reflect and relax. Feel the beautiful breeze & sunlight on your body. Do some stretching or meditating.
8.) Drink light
Instead of having that 1500 calorie pina colada on the beach, try having a tropical drink with a splash of soda water and some fresh fruit. For instance, a vodka soda with fresh pineapple or some fresh raspberries is smart choice. Most importantly, don’t overindulge in alcohol. Be sure to drink a glass of water between drinks if you are having more than one.
9.) End your day with tea
My favorite teas for detox and relaxation are dandelion root tea and/chamomile (both are perfect just before bed). They provide anti-inflammatory herbal properties and aide in digestion and anxiety.
10.) Be grateful and present
You are on vacation, this is a wonderful time to reflect on your life and think about all the blessings you have. Enjoy this time, laugh, love and smile. Be present and in the moment. End your day with a happy heart and deep gratitude.
